Signs You May Have a Compromised Immune System

Listen to your body. It’s constantly telling you when it feels good – and when it doesn’t. Here are some signs that you may have a compromised immune system, which could invite any number of illnesses or conditions.

Frequent or persistent colds

An occasional cold is extremely common and rarely anything to be concerned about. Most colds come during the change of seasons, or when you interact with others who inadvertently spread a virus. However, if your cold lasts more than a few days, or if one cold seems to follow another and you never seem to heal totally, it could mean your ability to develop antibodies is inadequate.

Recurring infections

Again, infections are commonplace, even in healthy adults. Some examples include urinary tract infections and sinus infections, which can be effectively treated with antibiotics, fluids, or prevented with better hygiene such as hand washing. But having a compromised immune system makes it difficult for your body to ward off bacterial pathogens. As a result, you may find yourself dealing with the same or different infections repeatedly.

Constant fatigue

When your immune system is in first gear, you tend to have a noticeable lack of energy. That’s because your body is conserving what little energy you do have to power your immune system. When your immune system is compromised, you might notice that you feel tired more than you should, despite efforts to perk yourself up. That can have a negative effect on your work, relationship, and ability to do even normal daily activities.

Wounds that take a long time to heal

Whenever you have a cut, scrape, bruise or burn, your skin promptly starts the healing process – unless, of course, you have a weak immune system in which case it takes longer for the wound to heal. Normally, your body brings nutrient-rich blood to the injury site to regenerate the skin and begin healing, but that might slow down if your immune system is compromised.

Swollen lymph nodes

Lymph nodes filter lymph fluid and produce white blood cells (lymphocytes) that kill bacteria and other foreign matter. These lymph nodes are located in your neck, armpits, and groin, and have a tendency to become swollen when they’re battling an infection or injury. If these swollen glands persist, it could mean your immune system is too weak to meet the challenge.

Being aware of these signs of a weak immune system can help motivate you to make necessary lifestyle changes – such as adopting healthier eating, getting more rest or exercising more regularly – to improve your health. It could also indicate that it’s time to see your doctor for a wellness check-up.
