What Are HSCs and MSCs?
The medical term for stem cells derived from umbilical cord tissue (as opposed to cord blood) is mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs, which are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into various cell types: osteoblasts (bone cells), myocytes (muscle cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), and adipocytes (fat cells). By contrast, HSCs, or hematopoietic stem cells, can be derived from either cord blood or adult blood. HSCs can be used to treat only the tissue type from which they are sourced. However, MSCs are the type most effective for treatment of many conditions.
What Are MSCs Used For?
MSCs are currently the best therapeutic cells in regenerative medicine for use of osteoarticular, muscular, vascular, and inflammatory diseases. That’s because cord tissue stem cells have the ability to repair areas of damage or inflammation in the human body due to trauma, disease, or dysfunction. As such, more than 50 medical trials are currently underway to research the use of cord tissue to treat diseases including asthma, autism, type 1 diabetes, cerebral palsy, eczema, hearing loss, and more.
