Pain can be Treated with Non-opiate Therapies

I recently read an article on a non-peer reviewed medical news site by an individual who is blaming the DEA for their inability to gain access to opiate medications to treat their painful disorder.  They recently were seen by a pain specialist because their neurologist and primary care physician decided that treating chronic pain is not their specialty.  They understood that opiate medications, which the patient has been taking for years, are under intense scrutiny and they felt that they should not prescribe above a certain amount based upon the recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).  The patient went on to say that they had no desire to take gabapentin (an alpha-2-delta calcium channel blocker designed to treat seizures but works well for neuropathic pain) or any of the other "anti-anxiety" medications that can turn you into "a drooling idiot."  They were appalled that the pain specialist would offer steroid injections that cause scarring and destruction over time and do not have enduring effects to treat their pain.  This patient sees nothing wrong with opiate medications, saying that they have 70% relief but their doctor won't prescribe them more to get the additional 30%.
